The Colorpoint Shorthair

Background:

The Colorpoint Shorthair originated in the 1940s. Cat breeders wanted to create a cat similar to the Siamese but with a more expansive variety of colors. Breeders crossed the Siamese, Abyssinian, and the red domestic Shorthair.

Cat Facts:

  • This breed is memorable for having sixteen different “point” colors!
  • He can sense moods, if you’re sad he will try to cheer you up!
  • Colorpoints have over 100 vocal sounds.
  • Their eyes are almond-shaped and a special vivid blue.

What are they like?
This cat is definitely an extrovert, just like his cousin the Siamese, he loves to play.

Some Colorpoints love their owners so much they will even shower with them! They are highly vocal little guys and love attention.

Though typically a healthy cat, this breed is prone to a few health conditions: protrusion of the cranial sternum and endocardial fibroelastosis.

Takeaway Points:

  • A Colorpoint Shorthair will require very little grooming, he almost never needs a bath. Using a rubber brush is great because it will remove loose hairs.
  • A male can sometimes be overly aggressive towards other animals. If he feels someone has invaded his territory he might start a fight.
  • Sometimes Colorpoints demand a lot of attention and don’t like to be left alone for too long.
