On December 20th, workers at a San Francisco recycling facility found a small, badly hurt puppy, reports CBS News. It appears that the 10-week-old pooch, nicknamed “Gem” had been thrown away by her previous owners.

According to San Francisco Animal Care and Control, Gem was found on a conveyer belt at a dump surrounded by bottles, cans and other recyclables. Though she was alert and conscious she had several bite marks around her neck, head, and ears and was also suffering from lameness in her hind legs as well as a discharge in both her eyes and ears (reported CBS News).

Animal control officers are asking the people for assistance in finding the previous owners and would like anyone with information to contact San Francisco Animal Care and Control with any information. Veterinarians treating Gem said sadly that it seems as though most of her injuries occurred before she was thrown away, but she’s doing well now and expected to recover.

Gem is a very strong little pup to have survived her ordeal. If you ever have reason to believe an animal near you is being abused, do not hesitate to report it. Take a look at the ASPCA’s Top Tips for Reporting Animal Cruelty.
