Most shelter pet parents believe that it’s the pet that saved them rather than them saving the pet. And in this case Billy Collins, a Vietnam veteran from Tennessee, the sentiment couldn’t be more accurate. Reported by Nicole Gabriel of BarkPost.com, the veteran took a bad fall onto his kitchen floor knocking him unconscious and causing bleeding, leaving his dog with no choice but to step in.
Collin’s disabled 10-year-old Pit Bull/Boxer mix named Chance was able to open the screen door to get help. Collins explains that he taught him how to open the door so he can get outside, “He hits it with his paw.” But that’s not the only thing this wonder dog can do. After getting outside, he somehow managed to get over a chain link fence to run and get help.
After the dog, who suffers from hip dysplasia, cleared the fence, he ran to the neighbor’s house. These neighbors used to be afraid of Chance due to his rather large stature, but after this, their feelings toward him have drastically changed. The dog had blood on his nose and paws, which the neighbors thought was from Chance trying to help Collins off the floor.
The neighbors followed Chance back to the house where they found Collins on the floor and were able to get him the help he needed.
According to the video interview with WATE6.com, which can be seen below, Collins and Chance have been together for nearly all of Chance’s life as Collins took him in as a puppy. “He’s my buddy, we get along, you know, he follows me through the house,” Collins explains. “We go outside, he’s got to be by me.”
Thanks to his dog it looks like Billy Collins just got another Chance at life.
